Somewhere between faxing an offer letter and reading your CEO’s last tweet, the era of the multi-generational workforce began.

For the first time, employers are seeing four different generations work side-by-side in business – each with its own unique set of values, experiences, preferences, technological expertise and work style that bands it together.

It’s an exciting and challenging evolution that has stumped some employers.  How do you create a productive, profitable, efficient workplace when your employees are all at different life stages with different responsibilities and lifestyles?

We’ve all seen workplace change before, but not quite like this.

Telephones, fax machines, copiers and computers all changed the workplace forever.  But they were tools that enhanced productivity and it was the people already in the workplace that were the first to use them.

Today, young people entering the workforce are bringing expertise with new tools, devices and software – like social media — with them into the workplace.  Using and adapting to those types of tools are a part of their DNA.

Many of these same tools are foreign to older, more experienced colleagues who communicate in very different ways.  It’s these older workers that understand products, service, operations and markets in a way that is critical to your organization.

At Perspectives, we help HR and business leaders anticipate and navigate these types of changes to get the most out of their workforce.  But next month, I have the pleasure of asking a Chicago-based CEO how he’s mastered this issue.

On April 15th, I’ll be moderating a webinar hosted by the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce titled, “Multigenerational Workforce Excellence,” featuring Geneca CEO Mark Hattas.

Mark co-founded Geneca in 1998 and is at the helm of one of the fastest growing IT services firms in the Chicago region. Having been awarded Deloitte’s Fast 50/500, Inc. 5000, 101 Best & Brightest Places to Work, and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce’s Workplace Excellence Award, Geneca embodies the benefits of a Multigenerational workforce.

Questions I have for Mark include:

  • How should businesses communicate with, reward, challenge and motivate employees with such varied interests?
  • How can employers encourage collaboration and get the most value out of this diverse range of expertise and knowledge?

As a part of this workshop, we’ll explore these questions and more, and share best-in-class examples of how to bring generational awareness into the organization and create multigenerational workplace excellence.

If you’ve ever thought about how to improve communications within your workplace, and tap into the reservoir of knowledge across generations, then I hope you’ll join us.
